Inside jokes

A lot of this elan is based on inside jokes stemming from shared arcana. Intelligence is both the currency or acceptance and the tool of ambition at Silicon Valley startups, and with a clever wit you can display your intelligence and make people laugh at the same time. Let me give you one very small example:

One day in Menlo Park, I saw a vanity license plate reading: KILL -9

Now, to anyone on speaking terms with shell-level UNIX, this is amusing. To anyone else, it is incomprehensible or maybe even offensive. I can come up with even nerdier and more obscure examples. But you’ll have to beg 😉
